How to *not* be on the Stan Milam Show

By Rose Stricker ( Contact )   May 13, 2008

If you do not want to be on the radio with Stan Milam during "open mic" time, the solution is very simple. Are you ready? Here it is:

Don't call.

Really. You would think that's fairly obvious. However, there are people everyday who call the Stan Milam Show between 9:30a and 11:30a who do not want to talk with Stan.

They prefer to talk with me. Or, they would like to leave a message with me to pass along for Stan to read aloud on the air.

This would be just fine if the Stan Milam Show was a call-and-leave-a-message-with-Rose show. But, it's not. The Stan Milam Show is a talk show.

Folks, if there's no talk, there's no show.

You simply cannot call a radio talk show and expect to not talk. And yes, talk on the radio.

One gentleman called the studio then insisted he could not be on the radio because his boss would recognize his voice. Dude, then don't call.

Furthermore, I am a lousy message taker. I really am. Aside from my illegible handwriting, if a message is longer than four words and is not in the form of a poem, I will forget half of it. I promise. It's not that I'm not intelligent; mostly, it's because I don't care. My job is to screen calls and put them on the air. If someone doesn't want to be on the air, that person is taking time away from my job.

The man who started his short (he promised me a short) message with the words, "First of all..." was sadly hung up on. Firsts are usually followed with seconds. Besides, he'd already used up three of his four words.

No messages. Sorry, I do have work to do.

So...

If you want to talk with Stan Milam during "open mic" time, please, dial the studio at 752-4000. I'll put you right through.

But, if you do not wish to participate in "open mic" on WCLO with Stan Milam, simply do not call. It may take some practice, but you'll catch on.

One of my biggest goals in life has been not to be on the Stan Milam show. Now thanks to Rose I can check it off my list (just like Earl).
Thanks again Rose

A radio talker named Stan
Has Rose serving as his right hand
When folks call the show
She will tell them to blow
If they will not talk to the man

It's radio Folks not Tv we can't see your face yet. IF ya don't wannta talk don't call how much simplier can it get. Stan has the best producer In the world. I mean Daily and fagerliare in the studio with him and half hour each. Rose gets and hour and half. thats a tough job keeping him on his toes, taking notes, making calls, thanks for the good work

You do a great job. It must be tough to keep the big guy under control when he starts one of his tangents! Too bad there are the nin-come-poops(sp)that make your job difficult.

Would you please tell Stan that his producer's blog has a great message for his listeners? [lol}

Seriously, Rose has a tough job... and if you realize that she is in the same studio as Stan with no isolation, you realize how difficult it is for her to carry on any length of a conversation. So please, everyone -- just don't be shy and participate in the show. Its fun!!

bwheelock: The switch-a-roo sounds interesting, but you just *know* people would make Stan take messages to pass over to me.

nascarfan: Hm. That's sounds a lot like taking notes... but we'll see. ;-)

Maybe for one show you could switch chairs and if people wanted to call to talk to you, they'd have to go through Stan. I *am* curious to see how many calls featuring poems you receive after posting this blog...
