Michael Phelps' Million Dollars

By Rose Stricker ( Contact )   September 2, 2008

Today, Michael Phelps announced the establishment of the Michael Phelps Foundation, and made his first donation by committing the well-publicized $1 million bonus he will receive from Speedo(R) for winning eight gold medals in Beijing.

Awesome! Just think of all the things a guy his age could have spent a million bucks on. A sports car, a house with an indoor Olympic-sized pool, another sports car...

Assuming we all would be so benevolent (and have all the sports cars we want), what would you do with a million dollars?

Hmmm...I think I'd start a pre-teen center for middle school kids.

I would fill my tank with gas and spend the leftover money on a hamburger and possibly fries.

Ok, I've been thinking about this since you posted the blog and I think I have an answer.
I would split it into an annual $10,000 and offer some sort of grant program to Rock County charities. I would give a total of $10,000 per year, and charities could explain why they need the money. For example, if ECHO receives a massive amount of support from other sources and didn't need help, then an ELL program might get the amount ECHO received the year before. I would probably have some sort of volunteer board to administer the money, because I might do something like give it to the Humane Society purely because they have the the cutest puppies.
