Do you pick up street trash?

By Rose Stricker ( Contact )   July 21, 2010

I noticed something exciting (probably only to me) this week:

There's an additional trash can at the corner of Parker and Milwaukee!

Yay!

Quite often in the past, I'd find broken bottles in the parking lot up the street from the radio station. Most mornings, there would be new ones where there hadn't been any the evening before. It was very frustrating.

There was a time I made an effort to pick up the trash and carry it to the trash can in front of the radio station. But one morning, as I waited to cross the street, it occured to me that the folks in vehicles also waiting for the light probably wondered why I was standing there at 8:45am holding several beer bottles in my fist.

Hm.

So, I am happy for the new trash can on the corner, because now I can rid myself of street trash without waiting for the light to change.

But Monday morning, there was something new discarded on the sidewalk. A half-gallon of potato salad.

I kid you not. The plastic bucket was mostly empty, but there was enough food in it to recognize the contents without reading the label. And it was on the sidewalk just five paces from the new trash can. Simply amazing.

I'm sorry. I'm not picking that up.

I pick up the trash from the Craig students that ends up in my yard. I live near Dairy Queen and Stop-n-Go so the bushes and lawns are usually full of cigarette butts, drink containers, dairy queen cups and spoons, discarded homework and papers and lots and lots of wrappers. The students usually come on to the apartment property so they think they won't be busted for smoking on Stop-n-Go property.

Yes, I pick up litter and trash!
You don't know real trash until you
live on the main street into the Fairgrounds!
Nothing is off limits from
dirty diapers, to food, to emptied car ashtrays or
emptied trash from cars left behind.
I wonder How Fair goers would feel if we trashed their walks, yards and street!
BTW did I also, mention .. guys like to relive themselves along the way, too???
Am I glad after 20 years, I moved away!

Yes, I pick up trash. I don't like touching other people's trash but I do it. I attribute my ability to do that from my dishwasher days at Mark's Big Boy. There was some very gross stuff in the bus pans and I figure if I could touch that stuff for hours on end, I can pick up a few things in the gutter.
