Return to the Time is short for these

Time is short for these "Friends"

By Rose Stricker ( Contact )   July 23, 2010

You may guess that a lot of people come through the WCLO studio on a weekly basis via The Stan Milam Show. I don't usually hug guests I haven't previously met. But today I hugged a total stranger... and she let me.

Sandi and her husband Randy run Fine Feathered Friends Sanctuary, a non-profit organization located in Edgerton dedicated to the care and placement of exotic birds. I've never been there, but it sounds like a beautiful place built on caring and love. Open to the public, you can visit the Sanctuary and visit the birds, hold them, learn how to properly care for an exotic bird... even adopt one!

Like many guests on the Stan Milam Show, when Sandi and Randy walked in we quietly nodded our greetings as Stan made introductions and gave brief instructions on how to best address the microphones.
But unlike most interviews, just minutes into this one I got a lump in my throat.

Sandi has cancer. Sandi has a cancer that is attacking her liver.
Just like my sister.

She and Randy are determined to arrange their finances so that the Sanctuary can survive on its own no matter what happens to these wonderful people. Sandi has maybe 4-5 months left.

If you've ever lost a loved one to cancer, you know the feeling of wanting to help and too often not being able to DO anything. Here's your chance to make a real difference for someone who is trying to take care of business before it's too late. Imagine the sense of peace Sandi could have knowing these birds will be cared for long after she is gone.

Will you step up?

One way you can help is to visit Fine Feathered Friends in person. They are located at 1570 County Highway A, Edgerton. (Find a map and directions here.) They are typically open Thursday through Sunday 11-4, but call ahead to be sure they haven't closed for an emergency. (608) 541-0090.

But, if you can't make the trip, contribute to Fine Feathered Friends directly through their website.

I hugged Sandi before she left the WCLO studio. I told her about my sister. I did not want to let Sandi go.

Please, if you feel moved, help Sandi know that her cherished feathered friends will have a safe home.
You CAN do something.
Make a difference.
Don't wait.
