Cigarette Butts
I always thought littering was an unlawful activity. Clearly, I am wrong.
Most every day on my commute, I witness a driver drop a cigarette butt out the window of his/her moving vehicle. Every once in a great while, I will also see a pedestrian or shopper (before entering a store) crush a cigarette out on the sidewalk with his/her shoe... and leave it there.
Apparently, they must know this is okay even though I do not. I see it so often. Who would just do that knowing they could get a ticket for littering?
I suppose this means I can drop my candy wrappers wherever I like. They are, after all, just as biodegradable as cigarette butts.
And if I drain my disposable coffee cup while I'm driving, I can just toss it out the window, too, if I don't have a convenient place to leave it in my car... as some smokers have told me is their situation.
So, here are my questions:
When is it okay to throw a cigarette butt (still burning or not) out a vehicle window?
and
When is it okay to leave a cigarette butt on the sidewalk?
and
What do you do when you see this kind of behavior?

"Not *in* the trash can. Toward its base.
She didn't bother to crush it out."
Okay think about this just for a second. She was smart enough to not put a burning butt IN the trash.
Most places have ash trays for butts near the doors.
SOME are inconciderate when it comes to smoking. Do you think they'll have repect for others when they don't even care about themselves???
I have seen the interiors of many cars and yes it is just lazy if you ask me. I have seen garbage cans full of trash pulled out of cars. I don't have that much trash in my cans at home in the house. Not sure why they cannot just toss the trash when they get home or whereever. Lots of places have TRASH bins someplace. It really bothers me when they do toss the trash on the road. LAZY and disrespectful!!

You're right, dini79. No ashtray in a hair salon (or anywhere indoors for that matter) in 2011.
I guess what I was thinking was... she must smoke *sometime* during her workday; what does she do with her butts then? Why couldn't she put it *there*?
It struck me as not just rude, but also lazy.

I know. Oh, the filth. I always feel this way when I see guys in big trucks or a someone driving an enormous SUV down the road, too. Blecch.

Why would there be an ashtray in a beauty salon in 2011?

Here's a good one:
I was half a block behind a pair of women walking to work. One of them took one last pull on her cigarette and then flicked it at the base of a trash can outside the beauty salon which they both entered.
Not *in* the trash can. Toward its base.
She didn't bother to crush it out.
Do you think there might've been an ashtray inside the building they entered?

I saw a guy the other day just toss his butt in the grass of a retail shoppe. RUDE.
I have an alley full of butts.

I'd take cigarette butts over insect infestations. The arsenic in the filters works as a pesticide. That's good, right? Always think about the latent consequences.

"I simply pick it up and hand it back to them."
Oh, bravo!
That makes my day. :-)

This makes me crazy too. I've got no problem with people smoking or doing most anything else as long as it doesn't affect anyone else. That being said, why are so many smokers such inconsiderate, slobs? I constantly pick up cigarette butts from the sidewalk in front of my business (right next to the conveniently placed ash tray). I've even had people throw them on the ground right in front of me. For them, I simply pick it up and hand it back to them. Just once I'd like to see the police log indicate someone was cited for littering cigarette butts.
