Raising Entranced Readers

By Rose Stricker ( Contact )   March 22, 2011

As a book-lover and new mother cuddling her infant son, I had this fantasy that someday I'd be curled up on the couch reading a good book while my child snuggled against me with a book of his own.
awwww
Nearly brings a tear to the eye, doesn't it?

At an early age, I introduced my boys to the Milton Public Library. They were familiar faces at Storytimes, active in the summer reading programs, and owners of their own library cards at age 5. Every spring during the Friends of MPL Book Sale, they were encouraged to pick out as many books as they wanted, and I'd buy them all. When the school book orders came around, I'd buy their favorite comic strip compilations because I knew they'd read them cover to cover.

I think, for the most part, I've achieved my goal of raising children who love books.
Why, just last night, I walked into the livingroom to see this:

Granted, neither of them was curled up leaning against me, but look at them!
Two teen brothers... spending time together... reading!

Oh, wait.
You noticed that, did you?

Oh, no! They're expanding their... BRAINS!!!

Heh.
It simply warms a mother's heart, doesn't it?

*sigh*

Amazing how some folks insist on tainting a FUN conversation with politics. Whatever.
