Wisconsin primary

By Stan Milam ( Contact )   February 7, 2008

Now that John McCain has no serious opposition (yes, I know Huckabee is still running, but come on) will Republicans cross over into Wisconsin's open primary Feb. 19 and vote for a Democrat? If so, will they vote for Clinton or Obama? Which Democrat would Republicans prefer to see on the November ballot?

The more likely scenario is that Republicans who dislike McCain will stay at home. However, in the early primaries, Obama has enjoyed the bulk of independents who have trended Republican in the past few elections. Wisconsin's fairly blue and we don't have a huge evangelical demographic -- and evangelicals are trending, issue-wise, toward the center these days anyhow, with some leaders talking up environmental stewardship as a Biblical issue, so who knows where they will fall in November? Republican pollsters say GOP voters think Clinton is more beatable. That, of course, gives Republicans a reason to cross over and vote for Clinton in Wisconsin, but it won't be much of a factor in the race here.
