Garbage in downtown Janesville
In the aftermath of the failed BID proposal for downtown Janesville, questions arise about what, if anything, to do differently in the downtown area to make improvements. I have been advocating for months to get garbage trucks, gravel trucks, cement mixers and semi trucks off downtown Janesville streets. The current ordinance allows truck traffic on nearly all downtown streets including Main, Court and Milwaukee. How can you expect anyone to enjoy fine dining at a sidewalk cafe when garbage trucks fly by oozing liquid whatever as garbage falls off the back of the trucks? Let's get serious here. How can anyone advocate improvements such as planters and signage when garbage is flying around? By the way, I'm talking about THROUGH truck traffic, not trucks making deliveries.

Thanks for trying to do this, Stan. Have you ever noticed the huge semis full of harvested CORN at this time of year rumbling south from Parker to Main just after dawn? What's with THAT???? I've witnessed far too many extra-long semis rumbling from Center to Main St., up E. Court, and out Milton Ave. with no absolutely no business the entire distance other than to disturb all the residential areas, destroy the pavement, and create traffic hazards. In the winter, they have more trouble making it up the icy E. Court and they stay on Hwy. 51 to Blackbridge without affecting their deliveries. Don't come off E. Court to go to Milton Ave. too fast or you might run into the back of a semi PARKED in the lane of traffic blocking while the driver is reading a map! Downtown they have to turn (illegally) from the far (wrong) lanes and they STILL run rear wheels over curbs destroying the pavement. Cars at stop signs and lights constantly have to back up to avoid being hit when the huge semis come at them - again trying to make too tight corners. The number of semis and other big trucks that go beyond Atwood on E. Court and E. Milwaukee (NOT truck routes) is simply astounding and, apparently, the police do not enforce "no truck route" zones. Until existing routes are enforced with Court and Milwaukee Streets returning to 2-way, I suspect the problem will continue to be exacerbated as most of Janesville's residents use these streets simply as a race-track across town and the trucks continue not just to annoy everyone but to create a hazardous situation.

Thank you for bringing up the topic, Stan. You saved me a blog -- as I was ready to rant about the parking lot on S. Parker Drive (kitty corner from M&I). Its littered with trash, broken bottles, etc. Would it be too much to ask to run a street sweeper through there. If one is expecting people to be impressed with our downtown we've got to start with the basics. If I didn't work here, I'd keep right on driving.
