Don't let Doyle off the tolling hook

By Stan Milam ( Contact )   February 23, 2009

Gov. Jim Doyle says he now understands that all alternatives, including tolling, must be considered when looking for solutions to the state transportation funding problem. Open road tolling is the future of transportation funding. Let's make sure the governor doesn't backtrack. We may not see tolling while he's governor, but let's get started on it now.

Yes Stan dont let Doyle off the hook, I have had my IL transponder since Jan 2005. I can now use it in other states as well. I love it and would like to see Wi update there interstates and use trolling. Doyle took the money from the highway fund and used it elsewhere.

I have a transponder. The cost was $50 but get $40 worth of toll, while non transponder vehicles sit in line to pay double. The state can also track you between tolls to check your speed. My next vehicle will be a cng/gas so filling up at home I won't be paying road tax unless I go on a long trip.

Be careful what you wish for. Just look at Illinois toll roads. Once the state gets money, it's never enough!

Linus, you bring up a very important fact... our gas taxes are horrendous--among the highest in the country! The toll road proposal would need to provide guaranteed tax relief to Wisconsin residents. As we all know, reduced taxes is an oxymoron. Once our leaders have their hands on our money they will not let go because they will always find other uses. So again, I would have qualify my support for toll roads to a guarantee of reduced (or eliminated) gas tax. Doesn't it seem fair to pay for what you use AND allow non-Wisconsin residents contribute to the cause?

Are you jamming me?!? First, Wisconsin residents pay one of the highest gasoline taxes in the country, so the money for the roads is already being taken. Secondly, where's the 800 million that was "borrowed" from Doyle’s FIRST budget. Quit trying to steal from Wisconsin taxpayers! Wisconsin clearly already provides ENOUGH funds for roads and road improvement, now only if our State would use the money correctly!

I'm all for toll roads. I'm a big believer in paying for what you use. As I recall from previous state discussions regarding toll roads, one study said the cost of operating a toll system off-sets the income. I don't buy that for a second. Wisconsin is over-due for a toll system and the sooner we get going on it the better. How about using some of OUR stimulus dollars to build at least the first toll booth at the Illinois state line???
