The Rock County Summer Olympics?

By Stan Milam ( Contact )   January 18, 2009

Right now - not tomorrow, not later today, but right now. That's when Rock County officials need to begin a serious investigation into what, if any, role the county can play if Chicago is awarded the 2016 Summer Olympics.

It's obvious Madison and Dane County have been looking into it. The Chicago 2016 organization has signed off on a plan to run the road cycling and mountain biking events in Dane County. Madison and Dane County offer a trio of advantages - University of Wisconsin-Madison dorm rooms to serve as a mini Olympic Village, the desired terrain west of Madison and plenty of hotels and restaurants.

It's unlikely Rock County could have successfully competed for the cycling events, but what role could Rock County play? Let's find out - now.

I agree completely. The Rock County area has some wonderful venues to offer the games and visitors. I wouldn't mind having those Italian cyclists or maybe some Romanian gymnasts stay at our home if the venue could be arranged!

I think we should get a beer drinking or brat eating event.

Stan, I've been thinking this same thing since I first heard Chicago was going to bid on the opportunity to host in 2016. We are only 1.5hrs from Chicago and if memory serves me, when Atlanta hosted a summer Olympics every hotel was booked for miles around. Who knows what opportunities there are: hotel space, food, construction labor, other services and supplies?
