A ButterBurger Salute

By Tim Bremel ( Contact )   October 8, 2008

Okay, first let me get this out of the way -- yes, the business I'm going to shout out about is one of our clients. However, that is not a factor in this observation.

On Tuesday, Culvers Restaurants celebrated "customer appreciation day" with $1.00 Butterburgers. A price that cannot allow for much profit. And the Culver's on Milton Avenue was jam packed over the lunch hour. People ordering anywhere from 1 or 2 sandwiches to 20 or more.

Lately, I've had my share of fast food restaurant nightmares. Hearing kitchen workers swear at order takers for miscommunication; waiting for my order to be taken until the young lady got off her cell phone behind the counter; unable to find a clean table during the later evening hours as the staff "visited" on and on and on. I also know many of you experience this same phenomenon and shake your heads wondering, as I do, "what happened to customer service?"

I found the answer at Culvers on Tuesday. They were staffed to practically overflowing in order to serve the crush of customers they knew would come out. EVERY person I observed was pleasant, courteous, and totally aware that the lobby area was full of customers who could hear their every word and see their every more.

Yes, I had to wait. On a day like Tuesday with the kind of offer that was out there... that was to be expected. But I actually had fun watching this crew of young and not-so-young people work together. A worker in the kitchen was wrapping Butterburgers at almost light speed, but never complained. Orders were taken within a minute or two at most. The kitchen staff moved at an astounding speed, yet all indications were they were almost enjoying themselves during this unique experience.

Outstanding service at Culvers restaurants in our area is certainly not unexpected. In fact, I know they pride themselves on it. But on a day that had the potential to be a service meltdown - the staff rose to an even higher level and made one thing perfectly clear -- customer service matters.

So thanks to everyone at Culver's who can still put the "pleasant" into the fast food experience.

Now - time for you to share. Where have you received outstanding service?

i have always received good customer service at any culvers i have been too, I know That Craig Culver Prides himself on that, My best customer service was @ LONESTAR in Rockford. the waitress was very polite, had 6 tables to herself and kept everyone Happy and serviced even though it was busy and in the Middle of July. She didn't mess up one order or complain and i could tell she was prolly well rewarded for that.

Without a doubt, Erika and Bill at Mac's Pizza Shack know their customers and provide excellent customer service. The same holds true with Edmund at Italian House. I find that either local franchise or homegrown businesses have the best customer service. Why? Because they are the community and they know their customers rather than providing cookie cutter "service" at corporate run joints. My 2 cents.

Rocky Rococo in Whitewater!
We have a group from work that goes there every week for their Extra Cheesy Superoni Family meal. The staff there greets us and knows what we want to order. They are always smiling and friendly. That has become our "comfort food" place when one of us is having a bad day.

The McDonald's drive-thru in Milton has always been staffed with friendly, happy people. I've always gotten a big smile whenever I pass through.
I commend their patience, as well. They have a tough job listening to their speaker with Highway 26 traffic whooshing by just yards away.
