Who would you choose?

By Tim Bremel ( Contact )   August 20, 2010

What do you prefer?
Function over form ... or form over function? That's one of the primary questions I'm wrestling with as we continue our search for the next talk host on WCLO.

Over the years, I've heard from several folks who were dismayed by the somewhat hesitant and unpolished style of our recently departed host. I also heard from others who didn't care so much about that as the fact that Stan seemed to know A LOT about the area.

Our current (large) stack of applicants offers several on both sides of the "form versus function" debate. I wish we had a plethora of candidates who offered both, but so far, we do not.

So my question to you as listeners is this:
If other things are generally equal, and the next host would have a good sense of broader issues either way, would you choose a smooth presenter over strong local knowledge(which we would require them to get up to speed on with time)? Or would you prefer strong local ties and knowledge over the delivery?

Please give us your thoughts, won't you?

I like the guy from NY you had one day. He was smooth and a good talker and knew how to run the program.. He got a lot of call in's. He had local knowledge. His name is Dan Conry and apparently lives in wisconsin now.

And for "frogger", if Stan ever cut anyone off, it was because they were talking out of their rear end, kinda like you are.

Stan is irreplacable. Please do not hire any of the "guest" hosts. I'm sure they are all very nice people, but they they put you to sleep and 9am is to early for that. We need someone with a bit of an edge! Keep looking until you find that person. The morning radio is off until then....

chp- STAN left!!
Also pick somebody WHO will let the open mic person finish a sentence. Stan was rude in this aspect of the show. STOP interrupting.

I guess I would like someone who is not only polished but also local. In my mind, I would like to see a show that would be hosted by Stan and Rose. And why not? It's worked for WGN (Steve and Johnnie) for over 25 years. They've been here for a while, are well liked in the community, have a good on air delivery, have their fingers on the pulse of Rock County, and are good with the listeners. And Rose-you can always beg for donuts on the air and have listeners bring them in for prizes. Worked for me for 5 years as a morning guy! Just sayin'...

ALmOsT FoRgOt - If Yuri can't - how about if you try to hire one of the beautful Fox news ladies. I would suggest: Julie Banderas or Molly Henneberg.

Yuri Rashkin would make a good one. He knows what's going on all the time, he's local, he's funny, and puts everyone on equal footing.

Local...someone who has knowledge of the area and people and issues...someone who can listen and encourage everyone to participate instead of acknowledging, as Stan often did, that they don't have to be balanced to all viewpoints and opinions in the quest for higher ratings.

Local is always better. I think it's easier to fix delivery than it is to learn and understand the things about the community that concerns people. Firsthand knowledge has to count for more.
