Who fought for you?

By Tim Bremel ( Contact )   May 30, 2010

I hear it when I host charity events: "We all know someone whose family has been impacted by (insert disease)".
Its largely true, and I have no desire to minimize the terrible fights caused by illness and disease. But today, on this Memorial Day Weekend, it got me to thinking. While we may truly know many impacted by illness or tragedy, all of us - every single person living in America - has been impacted by FREEDOM.
Yet, as is often said, freedom isn't free. So today, I'm thinking of all those who went into harms way for my freedom; for your freedom; for the freedom and rights of total strangers.

Whether they served in battle or during peace time, at home or in a far away country, I know a lot of people who served: my father, people I work with, many relatives, many friends.

This weekend, talking with and watching many of the military personnel involved with Airfest, I had a deep sense of pride and of security. What these men and women do is bold and brave. But more than that, what they do is unselfish. They train and work and sometimes even go into battle, to protect our freedom.

So this weekend -whether you agree with the politics or not - will you join me in standing and saluting those who put our country - you and me - before themselves?

Thank you to those who serve today, who have served in the past and especially to those who gave their lives defending our country. We all know someone... be sure to say, "Thanks".

My Grandpa was a Sgt. in the Marine's and served in the Korean War. I had an Uncle who was in the Air Force and another in the Army. Thank you to all veterans of yesterday & today!
