Your talk show - Host update
Actually, we've been through two weeks of "fill-ins" before, so why did this two weeks seems abnormally long to me? My guess its because the search has been emotionally draining thus far.
The good news is this: I believe we have several very qualified candidates and will ultimately be able to continue to do a live, local talk show with a compelling presentation. Whew!
For a while, it was getting a little "grim" looking. It seems that anyone and everyone thinks they can just walk in and do a talk show. We received applications from a lot of brand new broadcast school and college grads. Unfortunately, this is ultimately NOT an entry-level position. In fact, its likely the one job on WCLO farthest from entry-level. We also received applications from fork lift drivers, sales reps, factory workers, volunteers, housewives and a myriad of other employed and unemployed folks. Applicants from as close as right here in Janesville to as far away as (wait for it) Nairobi and Ireland!!
Needless to say, the application pile on my desk is gigantic. This week, we were able to sort out about 40 applicants that didn't "make the cut". We've still got a lot to go through. But interviews and screenings are taking place and my hope remains as I stated from the start - to have our new host permanently on the air by October 1st.
We hope to finish up interviews and screenings within the next two weeks and make an offer to our top candidate sometime the week of September 20th.
I know that's a long time to wait, but we want to make sure we have a good fit and a person who is committed to making this a long-term career.
In the interim, we'll continue to present you local topics by a variety of qualified guest hosts. I thank you for your support of the program and your patience. And as always, I welcome your feedback, either on this blog or by phone or email.

Why are some city council members imposing their own democrat political bias onto the city council, the city administration and the majority of the citizens, using this disguise going by using a city letterhead, falsely representing the city of janesville. Its a disgrace of their office, the city and its citizens. Don't they have enough smarts to write their own letters? Apparently not! Aren't they supposed to be non-partison? Have the unions and democrats taken over at city Hall? Heavan help us!

The Dan Conry comments are recent because he did not fill in as host until Sept 22. I don't think any other explanation is needed?? Well anyway's I looked into things a little further and of the four pro Dan Conry commenters- two are long time members here(myself included, one admitted to being a long time Conry fan, and one member is new. This is hardly cause to say their are "VERY suspicious undertones".
Now that we are into checking things out I decided to look into the two accusers of monkey bussiness- marleybug and myaimstrue. Both of these people just joined this forum to make comments in this thread!! and are Tom Edwards supporters!! now who is the one trying to pull something over??
Anyway's I think Tom is a very good host and could even fill in for Dan Conry when Dan takes a day off or goes on vacation.

Jml,
You cannot listen online (well, other than podcasts). WCLO doesn't offer a listen live service.

Actually, I am new here, and the reason I came to this website to leave a comment is because I--like many other Dan Conry fans--have followed his show wherever it has gone. I don't give a rat's behind where he goes, so long as he's on the radio and I can listen on the internet via livestream. Trust me, if you 'small town folk' don't want him down there, we will certainly take him back up here.
Also, you don't know his story. Give him a chance to tell it...then make your judgment.

Folks, I truly appreciate EVERY comment. I do not, however, have a lot of time for simple speculation and accusations of those expressing their opinions here or on any other discussion boards. Once we reach a decision on this position, I can guarantee one thing: It will be the right choice and it will be the wrong choice.
Truth is, there has been positive and negative feedback on every single candidate. The truth also is that every one in the remaining candidates under consideration is quite capable of presenting what we want: interesting, engaging discussion of issues that the community cares about (or should).
My hope would be that, whoever is chosen as the new host, all our listeners would display respect and courtesy for both the new host and for those who have so unselfishly carried the extra duties of guest-hosting in the interim.
Thanks for listening and offering your input.

I agree with myaimistrue. There is a VERY suspicious undertone to all these glowing remarks for Dan CON-ry. Sounds like the big city boy thinks he can pull one over on us small town folk. He could not be more wrong. How insulting! If he's such a world class talk show host, why is he looking in Janesville, WI. He's been all over the United States and not long anywhere. How long will he stay here? The great thing about Stan was that he is from here and cared about our community. The new host should be someone who really knows and cares about the area. I know we (your audience) don't really have a say at this point or you'd be asking us for our vote, but we will have a say when we stop listening.

Dan Conry is my choice! After listening for a segment, I was hooked. I found myself dialing in to WCLO during the morning as chores permitted and was entranced! Keep this guy, please!

Dan Conry IS a world-class talk show host with a HUGE (or "UGE" as Dan would say) following. I became a fan when he had his show on KTLK in the Twin Cities. Years after him leaving, people are STILL mourning the loss of his show in this neck of the woods. Personally, I'd rather have him come back up here and not let you southern Wisconsinites have him, but so long as we can listen online, I guess that'd be okay. We just want him back on the air because the airwaves are dull without him. I vote for Dan Conry.
Oh, and he's also truly a great guy. For being a 'big radio personality from NYC' he's as down-to-earth and real as they come.

Just did a search for Dan Conry and this guy is a world class talk show host with a huge fan base that follows him. He was a New York police detective and came from Chicago. He is very patriotic. He would be a huge asset to the whole community. I just hope the Gazette/WCLO can get him before someone else does!

By far the best host was the guy from Chicago. I think his name was something like Dan Conry? I think CLO should do what ever it takes to get him. I thought replacing Stan would be hard to do but this guy had me listening to the whole show and waiting for more. Get this guy!!!

Its Dan Conry for my vote. He had a fast paced show with a record number of call-ins on many topics, which he had good insight. He spoke his thoughts, much like Stan did as well. He did a great job, It clearly showed he was a veteran host and right on topic.

Please do not choose Dan Conry. I admit to prejudice when I say his New York accent really bothered me. It bothered me to the point that I couldn't seriously consider any of his comments valid. He was very biased, so much so that I could tell the tenor his next remark would take before he made it.

The only one with any edge was Tom Edwards. Yes, all the others have been huge yawners.

Obviously it would be good to find another Stan. That not being posible, please don't hire any of the fill-ins. They are putting me and others to sleep. I'm sure they are all nice people, but.... Please hire someone with a little edge. That is what made the Milam Show. If that's someone local, great, but if not you can surely bring them up to speed.

We listen to WCLO daily at work. Tom Edwards was your best guest host thus far. Finally, a host who obviously has done his homework on the topics and people being interviewed. He was current, fair, polite, a little humorous and did not pull any punches (gracefully). Refreshing!

If you were to put the new candidate in the studio with Rose and monitored her fidgeting and frustration levels, you may get a indication for a good candidate. I think Rose should be in the loop. I think she can be objective and knowledgeable on seeing the qualities within a potential new host. If you don't involve Rose because of this, just remember, the poor women has be through a lot with wild Stan, give her a break!

gwendt, We have a few applications from female hosts and are reviewing them carefully. I believe your assessment of the audience is correct and we have that as one of our high points of consideration. Unfortunately, the male applicants outweighed the ladies by about 8:1.

i sure hope you are considering women in your hosting search!! i would safely say that women would comprise about half or more of your daily listeners. Saturday mornings are a delight!!!! why not be delighted 5 more mornings a week?

Best wishes as you recruit a new host for WCLO radio's morning show, TIM! I do HOPE that JIM LYKE is one of your finalists! Having heard him again as your guest host last week, I must express my appreciation for JIM's on air style! IF JIM has not taken the initiative to apply, I dare to hope that WCLO will take the initiative to recruit Jim. Best wishes... I continue to listen to WCLO radio daily (7/7) with interest and appreciation, Tim. Here we go... John W. Eyster

THANKS for the update, Tim! As a regular listener to THE STAN MILAM SHOW, I have much interest in your selection of the host for the new show. YOU will never, ever had THE STAN MILAM SHOW again since STAN MILAM is a one and only!
I personally REALLY & TRULY appreciate JIM LYKE's radio personality! Yes, KNOWING JIM LYKE, I like his in person personality too! HA! He has done a super job with his "Community Blog," "LykeMinded" (URL: http://gazettextra.com/weblogs/lykeminde...), in my opinion.
I dare to have the audacity of HOPE that JIM LYKE is one of your finalists! IF he has not taken the initiative, I think WCLO ought to take that initiative and RECRUIT JIM LYKE!
NOTE: I did hear JIM LYKE as your guest host last week and truly appreciated his LIVE ON AIR WORK AS HOST, Tim!
I continue to be a daily (7/7) listener to WCLO radio (1230 AM) with interest and appreciation!
