What topics are "off limits?"

By Tim Bremel ( Contact )   August 29, 2011

I will admit it - I have a somewhat "weak" constitution when it comes to discussion of certain subjects on the air. And while I make every attempt not to be over-sensitive, I also believe that the sensational nature of some radio programs and hosts should not be a regular part of WCLO's subject matter.

That said, I do believe there is a point when we, as adult citizens, have a responsibility to know what our legislators are going to cast votes on, and give them our feedback. I would have thought most of the listeners to Your Talk Show felt the same way.

That's why I was so surprised to receive an email from a listener who was "appalled by your morning talk show topic today". The writer goes on to state that they are "pro choice" (and as such may not agree with my guest, Barbara Lyons of Wisconsin Right to Life) but that the conversation was "offensive".

I guess we will have to disagree. I don't believe our discussion ever reached "graphic" levels. We discussed the contents of the proposed legislation, how it could impact women, and I believe I even raised an objection or two on behalf of the pro-choice crowd.

So while you may find that Your Talk Show does not often delve into deviant types of behaviors or graphic details of medical conditions, stories and procedures, you will also find that those topics are not "off limits". At least they shouldn't be to me with this criteria - when they stand to impact a great number of citizens because of legislation, enforcement issues, health issues or other factors, I believe we cannot just "stick our heads in the sand".

But as I have said often, its YOUR talk show, and I'm here to discuss, listen and facilitate. I believe that Ms. Lyons presented legitimate information about pending legislation that anyone on either side of the issue should take note of. But I'll let you be the judge. Here's the clip from the show. (The interview is just a few minutes in.)
So what do you think? Should the topic of abortion rights and laws be, "off limits"?

The only subject more taboo than pro-life talk is discussing the treatment of women in Muslim countries. I know a few people who are glad what happened in German concentration camps was discussed - it led to their liberation and life being saved. What I find "offensive" is even suggesting we should not discuss our government's legislation of it's people or it's actions. Nothing should be off limits - but everything should be addressed in an intelligent and responsible way. The real question should be "is America beyond the capability of having a civilized discussion - or are we merely a bunch of whiners, complainers, and name callers?"

i listened to the interview. tough topic to handle.
but handled professionally -- and it was interesting.

what should be off-limits?
tough question -- if it involves certain appendages being unceremoniously (or ceremoniously for that matter) removed, then ok -- off limits.
in fact, would that comment make this comment off limits?
otherwise tim, anything goes.
the show is entertaining and informative - keep up the good work.

I called one time and they asked what my comment was going to be and they hung up on me. I am not kidding and my comment was not in bad taste, but it did disagree with the host. That was the last time I listened to the show.
