Contaminants found in Rock River near Janesville GM plant

City of Janesville officials say elevated levels of contaminants have been found in the sediment of the Rock River near the former General Motors Assembly Plant.  The contaminants were found as a result of the City's exploration of river sediment while analyzing the future of the Monterey Dam.  Officials say they've notified the DNR, and GM has been provided a copy of the report.  As the Rock River is under jurisdiction of the State, the DNR is the primary agency that will oversee the river sediment management process.   City officials say the DNR has indicated there is no immediate risk to the public health from either fish consumption or direct  contact.  The City's plan to either repair or remove the Dam may be delayed to allow time for the river sediment issue to be addressed.
