Schools, businesses, and community members often seek direction and request presentations on what they should do if confronted with an active shooter event. The Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events (CRASE) course, designed and built on the Avoid, Deny, Defend strategy provides strategies, guidance and a proven plan for surviving an active shooter event. The CRASE program is provided at no cost to students through the Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training Center (ALERRT).

ALERRT was created in 2002 as a partnership between Texas State University, the San Marcos, Texas Police Department and the Hays County, Texas Sheriff’s Office to address the need for active shooter response training for first responders. In 2013, ALERRT at Texas State was named the National Standard in Active Shooter Response Training by the FBI.
