The City of Janesville announces it has received the 2019 American Public Works Association (APWA) – Wisconsin Chapter Project of the Year Award for the Janesville West Town Square project. The Public Works Project of the Year Award recognizes the strong alliance between the managing agency, the consultant/architect/engineer, and the contractor to effectively complete public works projects. The award was presented to Janesville Department of Public Works representatives at the Wisconsin APWA Chapter Spring conference in Oshkosh on May 9.
The West Town Square is part of Catalyst Site 1 in the ARISE project downtown. The work to complete this project was done in 4 stages. Stage 1) Removal of the parking plaza over the Rock River in October 2016; Stage 2) The great lawn and the infrastructure for the Interactive Water Feature and JP Cullen Pavilion in 2017; Stage 3) Conversion of River Street to a Festival Street from Court Street to West Milwaukee Street, and the installation of the JP Cullen Pavilion and Interactive Water Feature in 2018; and Stage 4) The Dodge Street parking area and the Town Square Riverwalk which began in 2018 and was completed in early 2019.
According to Paul Q. Woodard, Director of Public Works, “This project wouldn’t have been as successful if not for the public/private partnership with the ARISENow group. The private funds raised by the private sector greatly enhanced the project. The partnership with the State and Federal agencies for grant funding was a great benefit as well.”
