A navy veteran and Beloit College alumnus is walking across the United States to raise money for veteran homelessness and suicide.

Tom Zurhellen will be walking through Beloit Friday morning, and Vets Roll is holding a send-off for him.

Zurhellen is walking 22 miles a day in reference to the Veteran’s Administration’s 2012 statistic that claims 22 veterans take their own lives every day. A more recent study found the veteran suicide rate to be significantly lower.

He started April 15 in Portland, Oregon and will end up in his hometown of Poughkeepsie, New York in late August.

The Vets Roll send-off will start at 8:00 a.m. Friday on the Beloit College campus. Zurhellen will start walking at 9:00 a.m., and the community is encouraged to walk along with him.

His path will take him up Highway 51 toward Janesville as he heads toward his next stop in Waukesha.
