The Janesville City Council is holding a special meeting Friday afternoon to review their policy for supporting multi-family housing developments with tax incentives.

Council president Rich Gruber said the council has approved projects bringing more than 500 new units of multi-family housing to the city, with another one set for review in early 2020.

They saw this as a good time to take a step back and review what they’ve done so far, to see if it’s time to change the policy and potentially start limiting TIF agreements for these projects.

Gruber said the council isn’t making any changes right away, but the meeting gives them a chance to explore their options moving forward.

The city is recommending the council limit future TIF assistance for multifamily projects to downtown and brownfield sites.
