With so many service industry employees out of work, a local man is trying to help those in need during the coronavirus outbreak.

Ian Hedges, who works as CEO of HealthNet Rock County, started an independent website to help organize donations for bartenders and servers who are losing their paychecks because of the public health crisis.

The virtual “Rock County Tip Jar” allows any local service industry worker to submit their information to a list where community members can donate to them directly.

As of Monday night, more than 90 people have signed up for the platform, which consists of a Google Form and Google Spreadsheet to organize the list.

Hedges said it’s not the employers’ fault that the businesses have had to close, and it’s not fair for the employees to have their income taken away so abruptly.

“I really hope the community can respond and get behind those who are constantly on their feet, serving us, and making our times in Rock County enjoyable,” Hedges said.

Community members are able to donate to the affect employees of their choice using payment services like Venmo and PayPal, which allows the bartenders and servers to receive the money directly.

Hedges never sees a dime in the process. He just wanted to find a new hobby and a new way to make a difference in his community, by helping other people help each other.
