Mercyhealth is implementing a temporary furlough program amid the coronavirus outbreak.

The health provider issued a news release Monday afternoon, citing patients “expected needs for critical care service” and the ability to “survive the economic challenges” presented by the outbreak.

Both Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers and Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker issued “shelter in place” orders in an effort to limit the public’s exposure to COVID-19

Mercy says the furlough will be in place for employees and partners who “are not providing direct patient care and for those that provide services that can be delayed.”

The company does not expect the furlough to last more than a few weeks, but it believes this measure is necessary for its long-term success.
