The COVID-19 outbreak in Rock County causes its first death.

The Rock County Public Health Department reported Tuesday afternoon that a 53-year-old patient died as a result of the coronavirus disease.

The health department did not disclose any other identifying information about the victim, saying only that the individual had no known contact with a confirmed positive COVID-19 case but traveled to Milwaukee in the days before showing symptoms.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to the family and loved ones,” Rock County Health Officer Marie-Noel Sandoval said in a news release. “We are facing extraordinary circumstances and continue to urge everyone that this virus is real, it is deadly, and we must continue to maintain social-distancing and adhere to the Safer At Home Order. Together, we will overcome these challenges and difficult days.”

Health officials say the coronavirus is in our community and likely being spread by people who don’t realize they have it.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Rock County’s total number of confirmed positive COVID-19 cases rose to 16. Rock County’s death is one of 17 reported in the state due to coronavirus.
