Police arrest a Fort Atkinson man in connection with a suspicious house fire near downtown Janesville.

30-year-old Jacob Piper was arrested Thursday afternoon for five counts of attempted first-degree intentional homicide and one count of arson.

Witnesses observed Piper throwing a lit container at the front of the house, which police described as an “incendiary device.”

He then fled the scene on foot, according to police.

The Janesville Fire Department was dispatched to the home in the 200 block of South Franklin Street at 5:45 a.m Thursday.

Firefighters found flames coming from both levels of the two-story home when they arrived, and the structure and contents were a total loss.

All occupants were able to escape and are being assisted by the American Red Cross.
