Cedar Crest is dealing with a COVID-19 outbreak in its facilities.

The Janesville senior living community announced five residents and 13 employees have recently tested positive for the coronavirus.

Marketing Manager Ben Reese said Cedar Crest is working with the state and county health departments on infection mitigation, with staff recovering at home and residents separated in a dedicated COVID-19 unit or local hospitals.

Reese said they have not been able to trace back a source of the latest outbreak, with multiple people testing positive around the same time, starting August 20. Some have been completely asymptomatic.

The disease reached residents in their skilled nursing facility, which has not been allowed to have outside visitors during the entirety of the pandemic.

Staff in the facility have had ongoing testing throughout the summer with a few positive cases, but Reese said this was the first time it spread to residents.
