Janesville seeking to raise fees for surrounding townships’ EMS and fire services

The City of Janesville is looking to raise some of its municipal fees to meet rising costs.

The largest proposed change is an increase in what Janesville charges the surrounding townships for fire and EMS services.

Finance director Dave Godek said the city currently spends about $1.6 million responding to those calls, but they only charge the towns about $600,000, leaving a $1 million gap for Janesville taxpayers to foot the bill.

The recommended change would represent significant cost increases for the townships, so Janesville plans to spread out the increases over the next three years, starting at about $300,000 more in 2022.

The Janesville Fire Department already announced it is ending its shared services agreement with Milton at the end of the year, forcing Milton to decide whether to form its own department or completely merge with Janesville.

Other smaller fees the city proposes to increase include building occupancy certificates, alcohol licenses, park pavilion rentals, summer camps and rentals of the ice arena and senior center.
