Rock County Board wants redrawn district maps to protect incumbents

Rock County is working through redistricting its supervisory districts.

The county board did not approve the first proposal for a redrawn map presented by the county’s Geographic Information System Manager Jennifer Borlick.

Some board members expressed concerns that the new districts included multiple incumbents in the same district, which would require them to run against each other for one county board seat.

Borlick said her committee’s priorities were to create districts with equal populations that were compact and contiguous while trying to follow existing municipal boundaries where possible.

The board asked her to bring back an additional redrawn map to their next meeting, requesting that the new proposal have districts that are less compact in order to better separate the incumbents already on the board.

The redistricting process has been delayed and condensed due to the late arrival of 2020 census data.
