The Wisconsin DNR is asking the public to avoid feeding deer as cold winter weather continues around parts of the state.

Wildlife Health Conservation Specialist Mandy Kamps says deer are used to eating a certain type of food source during the winter, so giving them a sudden change in their diet can be harmful and sometimes even lead to death.

Kamps says feeding deer can also lead to them congregating, and when a lot of deer are in one small area it makes it much easier for diseases such as Chronic Waste Disease to spread.

Deer feeding is currently illegal in more than three quarters of Wisconsin counties, including Rock County.
