Anyone who is interested in learning about LGBTQ+ topics is invited to attend the first-ever Rock County LGBTQ+ Educational Summit. The free event is set for 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. on June 22 at Blackhawk Technical College, 6004 South County Road G in Janesville.

The summit is sponsored by Family Services of Southern Wisconsin and Northern Illinois, Inc.; Janesville Pride; Yellow Brick Road; the Rock County LGBTQ+ Committee; and Blackhawk Technical College.

“This event is a result of many groups working together in an effort to help more people in our county understand LGBTQ+ issues,” said Stephanie Hormig, LGBTQ+ Survivor Advocate forFamily Services. “Many of us who work in the LGBTQ+ community have found that people may have misinformation. There is a need and want for education on LGBTQ+ topics. That’s why we developed this educational summit.”

The day opens with a keynote session by Dr. Mel Freitag, Assistant Dean of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Training and Innovation at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She will discuss gender-affirming care and the importance of diversity within the LGBTQ+ community.

The event continues with sessions on topics including LGBTQ+ Mental Health; Allyship; LGBTQ+ Myths; Pronouns; the History of Drag; and the intersection of the LGBTQ+ Community and the Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) Community.

Lunch will also be provided at no charge. To register and for more information, please visit https://www.eventbrite.com/e/rock-county-lgbtq-educational-summit-tickets-615062226677.
