Rock County looks to address nutritional desert designation

A recent report released by Rock County officials has found a good chunk of the county qualifies as a nutritional desert.

County Public Health Strategist Courtney Nathan says there are 16 full service grocery stores to serve over 164,000 residents, and if the county loses just one store, they’ll fall into the bottom quartile of access.

Nathan says they look at the quality and nutrition content of foods people in the county are eating, and the county’s obesity rate is 35% which is higher than both the state and national average.

Nathan says they’ve put together a coalition to help address the issue, and more information is available on the county website.
