Janesville council approves backyard chickens

Some Janesville residents may be doing the chicken dance.  The city council voted four-to-three Monday night to approve backyard chickens at single-family residences.  Up to four chickens will be allowed, but no roosters.  Several young adults turned out last night to say the option is attractive to their age group.  Aaron Aegerter with the Sustainable Janesville Committee testified backyard chickens would improve sustainability and provide nutritious food, pet therapy, and education in biology.  Opponents are worried the proposal will be too much regulatory work for city staff, that chickens will disturb other animals, and farm animals don't belong in the city.
