Janesville School Board at odds over international education program

school-story

Members of the Janesville School board butt heads over the school district’s international education program.

Time set aside to approve the program’s school-year budget and director’s salary at their Tuesday meeting quickly turned into a virtual referendum on whether the program should exist at all.

Board President Kevin Murray argued the program doesn’t lead to better test scores, global competencies or higher achievement, and has no concrete goals.

But other board members like Cathy Myers urged restraint, arguing that the program’s jump in enrollment from 6 to 25 students this year is a step forward.

The board eventually did approve the budget and director salary by a 7 to 2 vote.
