Members of the Janesville Police Department are mourning the loss of one of their own. K9 Officer Hardy has passed away. Officials say Hardy reported for his shift Tuesday night with his handler Officer Shaun Mahaffey, but appeared lethargic and collapsed shortly after. He was taken to Veterinary Emergency Services where tests showed he suffered a ruptured spleen as a result of an aggressive form of cancer. The decision was made to euthanize him. Hardy was the first K9 for the Janesville Police Department when the program began in 2007. Hardy turned 11-years-old in April.
