Janesville police appear to be having success with new methods designed to avoid escalating potentially dangerous situations.  Officers were called to an east side home Tuesday afternoon for a person suffering mental health issues.  A news release says the subject slammed the door when police arrived and stood facing a wall inside the home and refused to talk.  After failing at negotiations police appear to have taken a watch and wait posture.  Officers placed spike strips in front of the garage and prepared a “Pepper Ball” launcher.  When the subject opened the garage door and tried to drive away, the stop sticks did their job and officers were able to safely take them into custody.  The person was taken to a medical facility in Dane County.
