Former Janesville man sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for attempting to join ISIL

A 36-year-old Madison man, formerly of Janesville and Beloit, is sentenced to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to a federal charge of attempting to supporting a foreign terrorist organization.

Joshua Van Haften was accused of leaving the United States for Turkey in August 2014 in hopes of crossing into Syria and joining ISIL.

In addition to traveling to Turkey in an attempt to fight with ISIL, Van Haften is accused of trying to assist another American, Leon Davis, in joining ISIL.

Van Haften was arrested at O’Hare Airport in Chicago in April 2015, after his arrival in custody on an international flight from Turkey. He has been held in federal custody since his arrest.

After serving 10 years in federal prison Van Haften will be subject to a lifetime of supervision.
