Madison man sentenced to federal prison for passing fake $100 bills in Janesville

A Madison man who was arrested in Janesville trying to pass fake $100 bills is sentenced to two years in federal prison.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Madison says 22-year-old Cornelius Stewart plead guilty to passing counterfeit U.S. currency in November of last year.

In January and February of last year, Stewart and four others traveled to various cities from Baraboo to Janesville making small purchases with fake $100 bills in order to get back the change.

The group were taken into custody by Janesville Police after several Milton Avenue businesses became suspicious.

In addition to the prison time Stewart was ordered to pay back $7,500 in restitution.
