Janesville fire displaces 20 residents

A cigarette, disposed of in a plastic container, is considered the cause of a fire at a 16-unit apartment building on Janesville.  The fire department reports all 20 residents got out safely a little before 6:00 o’clock Sunday morning at 1410 Morningside Drive.  Fire Captain John McManus says firefighters attacked the blaze aggressively, but because the building had no firewalls in the attic, it spread too fast.  A dry, breezy night and old, dry wood in the attic apparently contributed to the fire’s spread.  The blaze consumed most of the roof.  McManus says someone in the apartment where the fire started called 911 and was told to pull the building fire alarm, and that’s why everyone got out safely
