Janesville Deputy Fire Chief James Ponkauskas expects the dedication ceremonies for the new central fire station to be a significant moment in the city’s history. The city broke ground on the almost $9 million project a little more than a year ago. Fire officials say operations have changed a lot since the former facility was built in 1957. The city has doubled in size, and the calls for service have increased more than fifteen fold. Talk of the need for the fire station began more than 20 years ago. Public dedication ceremonies for the station are set for 1:00 p.m. Thursday afternoon with tours to follow.
