Weeds may delay decorative fountain project in Janesville park

A new water fountain planned for the Traxler Park Lagoon in Janesville will be delayed.  Rock Aqua Jays President Tim Cullen, whose organization helped raise money for the fountain, says a thick mat of weeds could easily clog the fountain.  Janesville Parks Director Cullen Slapak says the weeds have been a recurring issue in the lagoon during the past 25 years, but he is not sure of the precise cause.  The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources told Slapak the type of vegetation in the pond will go dormant in late June or early July.  To prevent weeds in future years, the parks department could apply pesticide and gate off the Rock River inlet.  The fountain could be tested next week, and if it works in the current conditions it would be installed permanently.
