The case against a former West Allis Police officer accused of killing two women and dumping their bodies in suitcases in the town of Geneva is going to trial.
54-year-old Steven Zelich was scheduled for plea and sentencing Wednesday on two counts of hiding a corpse.
After the plea agreement was modified just minutes before the hearing, a Walworth County Judge gave Zelich two options, either enter a plea, and be sentenced later, or go to trial.
Zelich is currently serving a 35-year prison sentence in Kenosha County in connection with the death of 19-year-old Jenny Gamez, who was one of the women found in the suitcases.
He faces similar charges in Minnesota where authorities says the second woman, 37-year-old Laura Simonson was killed.
The plea agreement the prosecution and defense had agreed on (Wednesday) would have Zelich plead guilty to both counts of hiding a corpse in exchange for a recommendation of a five years prison sentence to be served concurrently to the time he’s serving in Kenosha County.
