More than eleven hundred Red Cross volunteers nationwide have been deployed to help with the aftermath of Louisiana’s flooding, and one local man is among them.
Mike Siwek of Evansville left Tuesday for Louisiana, where he is volunteering as an emergency vehicle response driver.
Southwest Chapter Executive Tom Mooney says the American Red Cross hopes to send a total of 1600 volunteers.
Mooney says volunteers help distribute food, water and clothing, manage shelters, and help in mental health counseling.
The American Red Cross opened 50 shelters in Louisiana that housed 10,000 people. Those numbers are now down to around 28 shelters housing 4,000 people as of Thursday night.
Mooney says there’s still a lot of work to be done.
Volunteers sign on for 2-weeks but can participate for longer after that.
