Beloit funeral director accused of cremating bodies without permit

A Beloit funeral home director is accused of cremating bodies without the proper permits.
According to the criminal complaint, the Rock County Medical Examiner’s Office contacted Beloit Police expressing concerns about the cremation procedure that 48-year-old Jay B. Gravitt was using at his business, Hansen-Gravitt Funeral Home.
Before remains can be cremated in the State of Wisconsin, the body must be inspected by a medical examiner, and a permit issued.
The medical examiner’s office says that in more than a dozen cases between January of last year, and May of this year, Gravitt sent bodies to another business to be cremated after having forged the permits himself.
Gravitt is charged with three counts of felony forgery, and five counts of misdemeanor cremating the deceased without a permit.
