Janesville City Manager Mark Freitag won nearly nothing but praise from six of seven council members during his annual performance review in a closed session Monday night.
Councilwoman Carol Tidwell was absent.
During his review last year, council members complained about his communication skills, but such complaints didn’t surface Monday night.
Council President Sam Liebert says a few comments were made that Freitag is rough around the edges when accepting feedback, but the follow-up always mentioned he has gotten better. There’s always room for improvement when it comes to communication, but Freitag scored better than average in categories council members scored him on.
The council granted Freitag three separate pay raises.
The first is a 2 percent raise effective Dec. 1, which boosts Freitag’s salary from $147,000 to $149,940, Liebert said.
The second increase is a 1 percent raise effective Jan. 1, which brings Freitag’s salary up to $151,439.40. The final raise, also 1 percent, will be effective July 1 and will bring Freitag’s salary to $152,953.79, Liebert said.
Freitag felt the review went well.
“Certainly a fair review. Much better than last year’s review,” he said.
His good performance is a reflection of Janesville’s success over the last year, and Freitag is happy to be the one leading the charge, he said.
