Janesville Fire Chief Randy Banker used a Monday morning news conference to say the investigation into Sunday night’s fatal fire at 603 South Main Street is slow going because of the extent of the damage. Banker says the first fire crews arrived shortly after 8:00 o’clock to find the second floor fully involved, with flames billowing out of three windows. He says police found a woman trying to get in through a second story balcony. Authorities speculate she was attempting a rescue. Firefighters began knocking the fire back, but also gained entry to the second floor. That’s where Banker says the body a 39-year-old man was found. He also says three other people were home at the time, but all were able to escape. Investigators are currently attempting to talk to witnesses, and are awaiting the results of an autopsy planned Monday afternoon.
