Weird winter weather could be good for the soil

This winter’s odd weather pattern may actually be good for the soil according to Rock County’s U-W Extension Agriculture Agent. Nick Baker says the freeze then thaw cycle actually helps reduce compaction, and better prepares the soil for next year’s crop. Baker also says the warmer weather and rains have allowed more moisture into the soil.  He says the biggest concern would be a long hard freeze without snow cover.  This could hurt winter wheat and alfalfa.
