State Representative Debra Kolste of Janesville announced Thursday that she is the primary author of two bills nearing introduction. One of the bills is a good government bill and the other is a consumer protection measure.
“The most important legislative meetings are the partisan caucus meetings,’’ Kolste said. “The important debates and decisions on bills are made by legislators meeting in caucus behind closed doors.’’
“By the time the bills get to committee hearings or the Assembly floor, the big decisions have been made in secret,’’ Kolste said. “My bill changes that.’’
The bill, dubbed the “Sunshine on the Caucuses’’ bill deletes the exemption in the Open Meetings Law for partisan legislative caucuses. Representative Cory Mason of Racine is the other leading sponsor of the bill.
The second bill has been named the “Right to Cancel’’ bill and was written with Senator Jon Erpenbach (D-Madison). The bill allows consumers who have entered a contract online for goods or services to cancel the contract online.
“Consumers who enter a contract online should be able to terminate the contract within the statutory time frame without driving to a store or office,’’ Kolste said.
