Janesville City Clerk works to address election night reporting confusion

Local election officials learn a thing or two from Tuesday’s election.

Janesville City Clerk Dave Godek says a delay in when absentee and regular ballots were transmitted caused the results on the county’s website to appear complete when they were not.

City Clerk Dave Godek says with a registered write-in candidate in the City Council race, it was time consuming to hand count the ballots in some of the precincts.  It didn’t take as long to count the absentee ballots by hand so those results were reported much sooner.

As a result, it appeared as though Janine Hegle had won a spot on the Janesville School Board. After the results were updated to include all of the ballots in all of the wards, Karl Dommershausen became the third highest vote getter, defeating Hegle.

Godek says he’s working with County Clerk Lisa Tollefson to make sure similar confusion doesn’t happen in future elections.
