A local legislator is warning against the state calling for a constitutional convention. Democrat Mark Spreitzer of Beloit says this type of convention has never before been attempted. Spreitzer warns a convention could open the door to fundamentally altering individual rights guaranteed by the constitution. Proponents say the convention is needed to force congress to balance the federal budget and reign in out-of-control spending. If approved in the Senate, Wisconsin could become the 28th state of 34 needed to call the convention.
