A former Rock County Jailer is busted stealing jewelry from an inmate when he hawks the items at a Madison pawn shop.
22-year-old Mitchell R. Wellnitz of Janesville made his initial appearance in Rock County Court on charges of misconduct in office, and felony theft Monday afternoon.
According to the criminal complaint Wellnitz checked an inmate into jail and took possession of a necklace and ring valued at nearly $3000.
The jewelry should have been stored for the inmate, but instead Wellnitz is accused of pawning them for about $1000.
Wellnitz, who’s currently free on signature bond is due back in court September 18th.
