Former jailer headed to trial on theft charges

A disgraced former Rock County jailer is seeing what its like on the other side of the law.  22-year-old Mitchell R. Wellnitz Monday morning waived his right to a preliminary hearing on charges of theft and misconduct in public office.  Court Commissioner Larry Barton also entered a not guilty plea for Wellnitz, who stood mute.  A criminal complaint accuses Wellnitz of pawning a ring and necklace for $700.   Wellnitz was fired from the sheriff’s office, and is free on a signature bond.
